Local Race Getting National Attention
November 5, 2012
The Huffington Post wrote an article today entitled “Brandon Whipple Attacked For Not Having Children.”
The article referenced a flyer that was distributed to homes in South Wichita by the conservative group, Kansans for Liberty.
“Usually political issues, we’re used to that type of attack. This one struck as very personal,” said Whipple, the Democratic candidate running for a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives.
Whipple and his wife, Chelsea, have been married since 2007 and have been trying to start a family.
“We felt that it was a serious attack on us personally and it’s hurtful emotionally. My hope though is that we get beyond this type of personal attacks,” said Whipple.
The flyer asks this question: Can someone with no children really understand your family’s needs?
Chelsea said her husband understands families.
“He knows them very well. He works with so many families right now. I just don’t see the connection between not having kids and not understanding families. It’s very hurtful,” she said.
Kansans for Liberty president Craig Gabel said it was an education piece for voters in the 96th district but it did not endorse either candidate.
“Until you’ve had a couple of these, you don’t understand families. It just asks the question, how can Brandon Whipple represent families effectively without understanding what a family is,” said Gabel.
Whipple’s opponent, Rick Lindsey, said he had no knowledge of the flyer and rejected the message that came across. He also said that whether or not a person has children should not affect his/her ability to be a representative.
