$45,000 Dollars a Day

May 24, 2013

Yesterday was the scheduled end of the 2013 legislative session. However, the House, Senate, and Governor have yet to come to an agreement on the budget that needs to be passed this year, and the tax bill that will pay for it.

The Kansas legislature hasn’t run this late for 43 years. Every day that the legislature is in session, the state goes $45,000 over budget. I ran for this office with a promise to restore responsibility in Topeka — and this is simply irresponsible.

I will continue to show up each day and fight to get a fair budget and tax plan that works for the people on the South Side of Wichita. However, I simply don’t feel right receiving pay because the leadership in the Capitol can’t come together and get this plan finished. I have decided to donate my salary for every day I work — from now until the session adjourns for the year — to a charity that serves the people of South Wichita.

You can vote for your favorite charity organization (Wichita Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, TOP Early Learning Center South, or the South Wichita YMCA) on my Facebook page here.
